Governing Board

The Governing Board of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) provides strategic direction, oversight, and policy guidance to ensure that the Commission fulfills its mandate of regulating and enhancing senior secondary education in Nigeria.


Composition

The Board is composed of seasoned professionals, education stakeholders, and representatives from key sectors, including:

  • Chairman – Appointed by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
  • Executive Secretary of NSSEC – Serves as Secretary to the Board
  • Representatives from:
    • Federal Ministry of Education
    • National Teachers’ Institute (NTI)
    • Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC)
    • National Board for Technical Education (NBTE)
    • State Ministries of Education (zonal representation)
    • Private Sector and Civil Society
    • Academic Experts and Professional Bodies

Functions of the Board

  • Policy Oversight: Approving strategic plans, regulations, and guidelines for senior secondary education nationwide
  • Budget Approval: Reviewing and endorsing the Commission’s financial plans and ensuring resource accountability
  • Monitoring Implementation: Assessing progress in the rollout of national standards, programs, and reforms
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Strengthening relationships with federal and state governments, development partners, and communities
  • Advisory Role: Providing expert input to improve the quality, inclusiveness, and competitiveness of senior secondary education

Board Tenure

Board members are appointed for a fixed term as stipulated by the NSSEC Act and are expected to serve with integrity, professionalism, and commitment to national development.
