Vision

To coordinate and oversee senior secondary education in Nigeria, ensuring the delivery of quality education.

Mandate

The Senior Secondary Education Department is responsible for:

Monitoring and evaluating reforms in the senior secondary education sub-sector, ensuring progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Education 2030 targets.

Training senior secondary school teachers on record-keeping practices.

Tracking teacher recruitment and movement, aligning with the Commonwealth Protocol.

Facilitating linkages between NSSEC and key education agencies, including UBEC, NECO, NABTEB, and WAEC.

Collaborating with international development partners such as UNICEF, USAID, and other stakeholders to improve senior secondary education in Nigeria.

Developing and implementing policies for both state and private senior secondary schools in collaboration with state ministries of education.

Engaging with professional education associations, including the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS).

Monitoring infrastructure in schools, ensuring compliance with minimum approved guidelines.

Handling public correspondence related to issues affecting state and private senior secondary schools in Nigeria.

The Senior Secondary Education Department plays a critical role in shaping the policies and quality assurance mechanisms that drive Nigeria’s senior secondary education system.
